On Monday, The British School of Nanjing was transformed into a vibrant celebration of culture, creativity, and community spirit as pupils, parents, and staff came together for this year’s Diversity Day.
Inspired by UNESCO’s World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, the event reflected our belief that intercultural understanding begins with shared experiences, curiosity, and meaningful connections. At BSN, diversity is not simply something we acknowledge - it is something we actively celebrate and learn from every day.
This year, our school gym became a lively “global village”, with beautifully designed cultural booths representing the United States, China, Thailand, Japan, India, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, South Korea, Australia, and Egypt. Nearly 100 PA members and parent volunteers worked together to bring the event to life, contributing extraordinary creativity, dedication, and energy throughout every stage of preparation.
Behind every game, decoration, activity, and dish was an incredible amount of preparation. From planning concepts and designing immersive displays to preparing homemade food, organising materials, and welcoming pupils throughout the day, our PA families devoted countless hours to creating an unforgettable experience for the children. Their passion and generosity could be seen in every detail.
Every country offered its own unique experiences, giving pupils the opportunity to explore traditions through food, games, crafts, language, and storytelling.
Children travelled from booth to booth with their BSN “passport”, collecting stamps as they completed activities and sampled treats - creating their very own journey around the world.
The Japanese and Korean booths focused on traditional games, filling the space with laughter and excitement, while the delicious food kept everyone coming back for just one more bite.
At the Egyptian booth, pupils discovered ancient hieroglyphics and learned how to write their names using symbols from one of the world’s oldest civilisations.
The Chinese booth combined tradition with innovation, offering both a classic rolling hoop game and immersive VR experiences.
Meanwhile, the British booth invited pupils to enjoy the charm of a traditional afternoon tea experience.
The Indian booth quickly became one of the busiest attractions of the day, as pupils eagerly lined up to experience beautiful hand-painted designs inspired by traditional henna art.
The Australian booth brought the spirit of Australia to life with a vibrant display of beach scenery, summer atmosphere, and iconic cultural elements, making pupils feel as though they had stepped straight onto Australia’s sunny coastline.
The United States booth combined classic American snacks with Marvel-themed elements, immersing pupils in a fun and engaging American atmosphere that was both familiar and exciting.

What made the day truly exceptional was the overwhelming spirit of collaboration within the BSN community. Our PA and parent volunteers did far more than organise booths - they created moments of connection, curiosity, and joy for every child. Their commitment transformed the school into a space where cultures were not only displayed, but genuinely shared and experienced together.
